A Gas Attack at Mile End

An amusing comical postcard produced and sent in 1915 refering to a gas attack in Mile End - (but this could be any other place typed in) with a poor chap horrified at what is being demanded of him.

It is perhaps not without some coincidence that this was the year that Gas Warfare was employed as a weapon during the first world war - the first use was against Russian positions on 31st January - and so may have given rise to the unknown artist to create this cartoon. 

And futher, you may wonder, is the man presenting the bill supposed to be David Lloyd George? - he was Minister for munitions and Secretary for war in Asquith's coalition wartime government....

In all events it substantiates the fact that despite adversity 'the bills must be paid' ........
