Poplar Police Station |
|
About
1861 the Metropolitan Police took over 193 East India Dock Road for use as a
stable. Later they leased
adjoining houses and between 1867 and 1868 converted them into a Police
Station. In 1892, the
Metropolitan Police was able to acquire the freehold of these properties.
A new Poplar Police Station,
designed by police architect John D Butler, was built between 1897-1898 by
Willmott and Sons of Hitchin for £9,985.
Built of brick and banded by stone, it was of three and four storeys.
In
1971 the Poplar Police Station
closed and was later demolished. A
small Police Station was opened in Market Way in Chrisp Street Market nearby.
To the right is J Seager, Stationers, Publishers and Postcard Publishers, who had the building purposely built in 1893. Today it is a fast food outlet and on the Police Station site, there is a block of flats with retail units below.
