Postcard of the month - #40 - September 2003

PO_128_Burdett.jpg (58828 bytes)

Post Mistress, Miss Edith Gertrude Hardiman and her Assistant outside her Post Office and Stationery shop at 128 Burdett Road.

On the right hand side of the Post Office is printers Arthur Haywood. On his wall is an advertising poster for a Whist Drive and Select Dancing on a Monday and Entertainment and Display Dancing on a Thursday at Limehouse Town Hall.

Gertrude, as she liked to be called, moved into the Post Office around 1929. Then in 1932 she moved a few doors away to new premises at 136 Burdett Road. In 1943, 136 Burdett Road ceased to trade as a stationery shop and it is possible that Miss Hardiman moved away at the same time.

However 136 Burdett Road carried on as a Post Office until the 1970s when it was demolished together with 128 Burdett Road and adjoining premises for the extension of Mile End Park.
