| Opened in 1828, George Green's Schools had originally stood on the corner
of Chrisp Street and the East India Dock Road. After an exchange of sites in 1883, the
school was moved to a completely new site further to the west of the old one, and it was
re-opened on Thursday 10th June 1884. The school's benefactor was George Green, the famous shipbuilder and shipowner of Poplar, hence the school's name. He was also the benfactor of other schools and churches in the area. From 1902 the school ceased to be a private one and became a Secondary and Technical School under the control of the new London County Council. During the funeral of those killed in the German air raid in 1917, the school's Cadet Corps formed the guard of honour outside Poplar Town Hall in nearby Newby Street. In 1944 the school became a Grammer School. Then in 1976 it moved a second time to Cubitt Town on the Isle of Dogs and became a Comprehensive School. The school has it's own website: http://www.georgegreens.towerhamlets.sch.uk/ |
