In 1885 a group of workers at Morton & Co, famous for its tinned food and preservatives, of Westferry, Isle of Dogs, formed a football team. As many of the players were from Scotland they chose as their colours those of the Scottish team of Dark Blue and White. Calling themselves at first Millwall Rovers, they played their early games on open ground near Glengall Road, now Tiller Road.

After some success they moved to East Ferry Road where they attracted crowds of over 5,000. Their local supporters were mainly dockers and those connected with the river. Away supporters found the ground hard to get to which meant that the crowd was tremendously partisan. Something it has always been.

At the turn of the century the club was told that they had to find a new ground. They found this South of the River at New Cross! In 1910, they played their last game on the Isle of Dogs and, as they say, the rest is history.
